We are nearing the end of our look at the 8 Pillars of Culture here at Mid South. I like to include this graphic periodically to remind us of each of the pillars and our foundation of faith.

We are ready to look at the Pillar of Accountability. Rather than discussing how to hold people accountable, I would rather approach this differently. I would rather look at accountability as an internal process. In reality, I am the only one who can make me be accountable. The greater question is how can we foster an environment where people want to be accountable.

Accountability means showing up and setting out to accomplish the things you’d said you’d do. It’s about taking personal responsibility for your work. It’s also trusting in your teammates and knowing you can count on each other to get things done. So how do we develop this kind of team?

1. We model. We show up every day. We show up on time. We complete tasks without complaining. We take responsibility for our actions. We give trust and respect. We model the level of accountability that we are looking for in others.

2. We establish clear, high expectations for ourselves and others. We hold ourselves accountable and then coach, encourage and enable others to reach their highest potential. Don’t be afraid to set the bar high. People will often rise as high as our expectations for them.

3. We Make and Keep Promises. Do what you say you are going to do. Don’t be afraid to say “No”. There is no quicker way to build or destroy relationships than with our word. This lies at the heart of personal integrity and directly impacts our ability to influence others.

“Responsibility equals accountability equals ownership. And a sense of ownership is the most powerful weapon a team or organization can have.”

Today I will be a model of accountability in my facility and expect the same of those around me!

Have a great week!
