Pillar of Culture 8 - To Help

We have officially made it to the end of our 8 Pillars of Culture at Mid South. This week we will look at pillar 8, To Help. By the simple fact that we are at Mid South, I would tend to believe that we have a strong desire to help others. I think we have to balance our desire to help with our own need to be helped. I don’t think I need to tell anyone on this team how to help. So, I want to approach this pillar from a different perspective.

Many years ago, I worked with the City of Memphis Police Department to develop a program to train first responders to better respond to citizens/patients with mental illness. That program became a model to help so many suffering from adjustment disorders and mental illness. After a year of the program, we realized we really were making an impact in the community. However, we did not account for the toll that caring for others was taking on the helper. As a result, we developed a training model entitled “Helping the Helper”. This was designed to help meet the needs of first responders. In a lot of ways that is what we are. From patients to co-workers, to children, to aging parents we are all first responders to so many people in our lives.

Throughout these 8 pillars of culture, we have discussed numerous ways to help others. I want to make sure we also know there is a helping network available to help each of us. I hope you will make a point to read Mr. Cole’s Monday Message this week. He will be announcing yet another step that Mid South is taking to help and serve the team members of this company.

As I write this blog late on Tuesday evening, I am reading through a list of prayer requests that are coming in ahead of tomorrow’s Gather Prayer Meeting. This scripture came to my mind,

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Psalms 121:1

I take great comfort in knowing where my help will come from. I also take comfort in knowing that I work for a company where God has placed so many people ready to stand in the gap for me.

Whether it is me or a supervisor, team member, or even the CEO, at Mid South help is only a phone call away.

Yours in Christ,

dan
